"All About Me Bag" a great activity to do during the first week of school. Have the kids put 3-5 items in the bag that represents them. Bring the bag to school and present your items to the class. By the end, we will all know a little more about everyone. A great way to break the ice that first week and to get your students more comfortable with one another.

This website provides many different icebreakers and activities to get to know your students at the beginning of the year. My favorite is the "These are some of my favorite things" activity. Where students draw a few of their favorite things, explain them to the class and then the class gets to ask questions to get to know their teacher and their classmates more.

Class-Created Puzzles
Using a large piece of tagboard, draw as many puzzle pieces as there are students, plus one for the teacher. Then number them on the back and cut them out. Students decorate their pieces with their names, pictures, and words. We share these as a group and then reassemble the puzzle on a bulletin board to symbolize the importance of each individual's contribution to the class as a whole.

Spin a Classroom Web:
begins the school year with a "unique" discussion circle. "I take a ball of yarn and tell the students holds onto the string, tosses the yarn ball to one of her students, and asks him or her to reveal something unique. By the time the ball of yarn has made its way around the circle, everyone will be holding a part of it, and it will look like a web. By encourage them to discover that, even though we are all unique and special, we are all connected to each other like the web.
